What is eJuice?

If you are new to vaping, you may have questions about what eJuice is and how to get the most out of the vape juice you selected. e-Liquids are based on a blend of vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and artificial flavors to provide the characterizing taste. Nicotine is present in most e-Juice flavors but there are zero and low-nic options available. eJuices are extremely effective and most satisfying when vaped out of the appropriate vape mod or pod kit. 

Vaping Experience

There are two basic ways to vape and the vape juices and devices on the market cater to these distinct styles. There is mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping and direct lung (DL) vaping. MTL vaping more closely resembles the inhalation action of a combustible. You first fill your mouth with vapor before drawing it into your lungs.

Mouth to Lung vaping works best with less powerful and lower wattage devices, such as pod systems. The average adult vaper who is looking for a compact vape device that is easy to use will be well served by MTL vaping. Whether it is classic vape pens, vape pod kits or lower wattage mods, MTL vaping puts the focus on flavor and convenience. Nic salt vape juice is the most popular style with MTL vapers.

Direct lung vaping is more closely associated with sub-ohm tanks and vape mods. Sub-ohm describes the resistance of the coil used to vaporize eliquids. Lower resistance coils heat faster and can use higher wattage settings. This means more vapor and this allows lower nicotine vape juices to provide a satisfying experience. The open draw of vape tank allows the vaper to inhale straight into their lungs, hence the term direct lung.

What to Look For When Shopping for eJuice

There are a couple pieces of information on each vape juice bottle that will tell you what style of vaping an e-liquid has been formulated for and what type of device it will work best in. VG/PG Ratio

The most important factor when selecting an e-juice is nicotine strength. High nicotine strength salt nic should not be vaped out of mod tanks or with higher wattage vape pod kits. They are much too potent and designed to be vaped with higher resistance coils and pod and generally have a nicotine strength that ranges from 25 to 50mg (2.5 to 5.0%).

The most popular salt nic juices are sold in fruity flavors fused with menthol ice. For comparison, an eJuice formulated for a vape mod will have a nicotine strength that ranges between 0 and 12mg, with 3 and 6mg being the most popular. Dessert flavors really shine in vape mods although menthol is still a popular addition. 

Nic salt juice is formulated for smaller, often draw activated, vape pods. The VG/PG ratio also provides insight into the performance and use case for an e-liquid. High-VG vape juices are generally 70 percent vegetable glycerin. Vegetable glycerin generates thicker clouds and with few exceptions a high-VG vape juice will be sold in lower nicotine strengths.

The typical nic salt vape juice has a 50/50 ratio of VG/PG. This provides a good balance of flavor and vapor. Draw activated vape pods, especially the lower wattage ones, were expressly designed to make vaping nicotine salt vape juice as easy as possible.

Types of Nicotine

There are two primary forms of nicotine found in e-liquid. The flavors featured on our e-juice page, as mentioned above, are formulated for vapor production and work best with a more powerful device with adjustable wattage. 

Freebase

These great flavors are mod fuel and use freebase nicotine. This is the classic form of nicotine found in e-juice and is present lower nicotine strengths when compared to nic salts.

The lone exception is Tru-Nic, a low potency salt nic formula. There is no reason nicotine salts can’t be used in lower strengths, but freebase nicotine is quite sufficient for these purposes. The term freebase never appears on vape juice bottles and is still viewed as the default when labeling. 

Nic Salt

Nic salt e-liquids use salt nicotine, which has a lower pH level than freebase nicotine. This allows e-juice formulators to add it in greater quantities. Freebase becomes too harsh when present in the elevated strengths found in salt nic juices, although it works great in high-VG vape juice. The strength of salt nic juice facilitates MTL vaping but also precludes the use of nicotine salt e-liquid in vape mods or in high wattage vape pod kits.
