What Chemicals are in Vape Juice?

When it comes to vape juice, ingredients are incredibly important. While most vapers know about the VG and PG that make up the bulk of the liquid, many want to know exactly what chemicals are in vape juice. eJuice Direct is dedicated to providing only high-quality e-Liquids with food grade components certified for safety, but as a community of vapers, we must have an understanding of what goes inside our e-juice and how the components work.
First and foremost is nicotine; the addictive chemical in all vape juices except those labelled as containing 0mg nicotine. Nicotine comes from a plant in the nightshade family, closely related to tomatoes, eggplants, and petunias. When this chemical enters the body, it acts as a stimulant in the nervous system, which causes the well-known ‘nicotine rush.’ In terms of safety, nicotine-containing products from reputable brands are safe for adults to consume in moderation. In standard e-juice, the nicotine is freebase, meaning it has been chemically altered to more easily absorb in the body. In nic salt e-juices, the nicotine is in the salt form as it is found in the nicotine plant. Both forms are equally safe to use and have the same effect in the body; most vapers chose one over the other due to the differences in the experience of vaping either one. For more information about nicotine in nic salts and standard e-juice, check out our Nic Salt Vs. Regular eJuice Blog here.
Next up are the VG and PG, the most famous ingredients that vapers know well. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is a vegetable based liquid with a thick texture and sweet taste. A higher percentage of VG in your e-juice will lead to bigger cloud production, a sweeter flavor, and potentially more residue left in your tank and on your coils. Propylene Glycol (PG) is a substance used in many food-grade products, such as vanilla extracts and food coloring, to distribute flavor evenly. A higher percentage of PG in your e-juice will produce a lighter throat hit, smaller clouds, and potentially less residue in your vape device. Both VG and PG are safe to consume and are wildly common in foods, cosmetics, and hygiene products. Lastly, and possibly our favorite, is the flavoring. All trusted e-Liquid brands use food-grade flavoring in their vape juice, the same kind you will find in anything from candy to gum to snack foods. Both natural and artificial flavors are common in e-juice, and the only major difference between the two may be price, as natural flavors tend to be a bit more expensive for e-Liquid brands to use. If you want to stay away from artificial flavors for any reason, every e-juice bottle will denote what kind of flavorings they use in the ingredients list so you can make your purchase without worry.
